The test comprises of two parts, 50 multiple choice questions followed by a hazard perception test. You have to pass both parts to be successful. Once you pass your theory test you can apply to take a practical driving test.
Part one-multiple choice
Before the test starts you are given on screen instructions on how the test works. You can choose to take a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.
Each question has several answer options. You select the correct answer by touching the computer screen. Some questions require multiple answers.
If you are unsure of a question there is an option to "FLAG" questions and return to them later. Once you have completed the multiple choice part you can take a break of up to three minutes before you start the hazard perception test.
Time allowed for the questions - 57 minutes
Pass mark - 43 out of 50
Part two-hazard perception
You are shown a short video clip about how the test works. The hazard perception is also delivered on the computer but you respond to a hazard by clicking the mouse.
You are presented with 14 video clips of every day roads scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard. One of the clips will have two developing hazards.
To obtain a high score you must click as soon as the hazard starts developing. The highest score you can achieve for each clip is five.
As in real life you only get one chance to respond to a hazard, in this part of test you cannot review any video clips.
Pass mark-44 out of 75
At the end of the test
When you have finished the test you can leave the examination room. You will then be given your result by the test centre staff.
